Boat Collision Near Chios Leaves Dozens Hurt
The crash took place Tuesday night close to Mirsinidi Beach, where emergency crews retrieved 14 bodies from the water after the impact.
A broadcaster reported the development, referencing information provided by the Greek Coast Guard.
Several injured migrants were transported to medical facilities for care, among them seven children and two expectant women, according to authorities.
Two members of the Coast Guard were also admitted to hospitals. Reports indicated that a female officer sustained a concussion, while a male officer suffered an injury to his upper limb.
In addition, four migrants were said to be in critical condition, enduring serious trauma such as liver rupture, a collapsed lung, splenic rupture, and traumatic brain injuries.
In response to the tragedy, Greek officials initiated an extensive search and rescue mission that included a privately owned vessel with civilian divers on board, as well as a military helicopter outfitted with thermal imaging technology.
The Defense Ministry later confirmed that an Air Force Super Puma helicopter had been dispatched to assist in the ongoing rescue operation.
