Transylvanian Village Jucu is Building a Saltwater Spa Park
Jucu commune (Northern Transylvania, Romania) has already the plans to build a spa park designed to harness the curative potential of the saltwater resources.
JUCU, TRANSYLVANIA, ROMANIA, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Jucu commune (Northern Transylvania, Romania) will build a spa park designed to harness the curative potential of the saltwater resources within its territory—a potential that currently remains completely unexploited. The new spa park in Jucu will complete the string of health and spa resorts in Cluj County, which already includes Turda, Cojocna, and Dej.The Jucu Local Council owns an area of approximately 10 hectares in the saltwater zone. "We want to create this spa park, including through European funding. It will be a multi-stage development. In the first stage, construction is set to begin on two-thirds of the 10-hectare site," declared the mayor of Jucu commune, Valentin Dorel Pojar. He estimates that the development of the new park will require an investment of approximately 20 million euros.
"Recently, in Brussels, I met with both European Commission experts and members of the European Parliament. I observed that the European Union is relying on 'The Right to Stay' strategy to maintain the vitality of local communities, especially those in rural areas. Our development vision for the Jucu Spa Park aligns perfectly with this European vision. In Jucu, we are not simply building a few guesthouses and swimming pools. It is about much more than that. We aim to offer equal access to public healthcare services by making use of the curative potential of local saline waters. These are health services designed to prevent illnesses, treat them where necessary, and provide medical rehabilitation for those suffering," said the mayor of Jucu, Valentin Dorel Pojar.
Practically, the new Jucu Spa Park will mean setting up a modern medical treatment facility using European funds. This will ensure that residents of Jucu and neighboring communes have access to high-quality medical services while creating jobs for young people who have trained to become doctors, nurses, or orderlies. Mayor Valentin Dorel Pojar stated that he is open to a partnership involving the Rehabilitation Hospital in Cluj-Napoca as well as the "Iuliu Hațieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy. He believes the new spa park will also be able to host research projects that will attract PhD students and young academic staff to Jucu.
In his vision, the Jucu Spa Park will have a very low carbon footprint. "We will use heat pumps and photovoltaic panels to generate the electrical and thermal energy needed to operate the spa park. Additionally, we will encourage electric transport. The park will be served by electric buses operated by the Cluj Public Transport Company, and we will install charging stations for electric cars and bicycles. Rainwater will also be collected and used to irrigate green spaces," Mayor Valentin Dorel Pojar added.
Furthermore, he aims to conclude a partnership with the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca to establish short supply chains for the dining facilities within the Jucu Spa Park. This comes as Jucu commune is renowned for its vegetable farms and local breeds, such as the Jucu Merino sheep. "It brings the 'Farm to Fork' concept to life by giving consumers direct access to fresh, high-quality food. We will prioritize local varieties and breeds, from 'Oxheart' tomatoes to Apahida radishes or Bazna Black pigs sourced from local farms. Consequently, the environmental impact of transporting raw ingredients will be greatly reduced. Moreover, this approach will encourage the preservation of biodiversity," says the mayor of Jucu. Another advantage is that it will provide work for young farmers and local food processing units, creating jobs for youth in canteens, restaurants, and other food service establishments serving future park visitors.
Another partnership is planned with Babeș-Bolyai University, an institution that trains specialists in tourism. Mayor Valentin Dorel Pojar states that developing medical tourism will be a priority. However, following the completion of the first stage—when the spa park will feature modern access infrastructure and become operational—it is certain that private investors will also emerge to develop spa tourism through their own investments.
"We will not oppose the development of private investments alongside public ones. Private hotels and guesthouses will offer jobs for young people from our commune and surrounding areas. This will give young adults the opportunity to remain in their communities and prevent the formation of a demographic desertification ring, such as those that have appeared around major Western European metropolises that offer far more career prospects to rural youth. In our case, young people will have access to well-paid jobs, decent housing, easy access to quality public services, and a healthy environment, giving them every reason to stay at home. Here in Jucu, we are a multicultural and multiconfessional community. We have Romanians, Hungarians, Roma, Italians, and Germans, and we have Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical churches, and so forth. We want to preserve this diversity. Jucu is a miniature Europe, and we want it to stay that way," said Mayor Valentin Dorel Pojar.
He added that he will require private investors to respect the same environmental standards as the public project, for which he hopes to secure European funds from the budgets available starting in 2028.
